September 12, 1941 – December 6, 1941
On September 12, 1941, I was drafted by the Scottsbluff Draft Board. After processing at Leavenworth, Kansas, I was sent to Camp Roberts, California, for basic training and daily instruction in being a Morse Code radio operator. There was no war yet, but America was gearing up for what would become World War II. My training was within a week of completion when the December 7th Pearl Harbor attack squelched my plans for leave and a Christmas holiday in Nebraska.
