April 1942. Rode in a truck convoy to Ft. Lewis, Washington and now am a member of a field artillery battalion armed with 155mm howitzers. I trained for several weeks at an artillery range in the vicinity of Yakima, Washington. At Ft. Lewis, I met a lady at a USO dance who would from this time until her death in 1997, regularly write to me all through the war years and the years following. Her name was Mattie Scott, a name I will never forget.
